We see things the way our eyes are instructed to see them, and we assume things because of our experiences, our bias and our prejudices. Our mindset controls how we evaluate and react to events around us. Much of who we are on a day-to-day basis comes from our mindset. Our mindset is the view we have of our qualities and characteristics – where they come from and whether they can change.
A positive mindset will change your life. Here’s five practical tips on how to achieve a positive mindset:
This may seem obvious, but trust me, it works. If you start the day with a negative emotion, that pessimistic view will be carried into everything you do for the day. At times we all inhibit ourselves and our thinking with negativity, but this inhibition is to stop ourselves from being the best we can be. So start your day with a positive affirmation, and you’ll be amazed how positive your day is. We have the power to choose positive emotions and ways of thinking, so make the choice today to be positive.
Learn from your mistakes
No one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. But it’s the people who learn from their mistakes and don’t dwell on how they failed that go far in life. Think of your failures as your lessons, and work out what you will do next time. Positivity, positivity, positivity.
Change your language
We all know that the words we use can have a positive or negative impact on what we’re doing and who we are talking to. But negative self-talk can be hard to notice. When someone asks how you are, rather than saying ‘Not too bad’, say ‘very well, thanks’. Replace the negative messages with positive ones and you’ll soon see a difference.
Focus on the present
The past is a place of reference, not residence. Yes we need to look at history in order to learn from it and move on, but it is even more important to learn to live in the now. By focusing on one individual moment, whatever negative scenario has taken place won’t seem that bad, and in many situations you will find it is not as bad as you imagined. Much negativity stems from a negative memory or an exaggerated imagination of a future event. Stay in the present, leave the past where it is.
Goals help to create a more positive outlook as they immediately make you more hopeful and confident as you look to the future and move forward in your life. Set small achievable goals that can build into something bigger. You are more likely to achieve your goals if you word them positively, so work towards something rather than aiming to avoid something, in order to avoid feelings of failure or shame.
Most experiences in life are due to how we interpret or respond to our surroundings. Rather than responding negatively, we can train our brains to choose to respond differently, and in doing so we can become more positive.
