I love to party and there is no better time than St Patrick’s weekend, and no better place than the North East coast. We are looking for mix of green, and I am sure that if you mix Irish with Geordie they would be green in every way, so this year we are having a carnival - a Green Carnival no less - all for charity and all for fun. This is a call to join us at the iconic Tynemouth Priory and Castle on March 17th/18th. Check out the website here and our Facebook and Twitter pages for all the details.
In the meantime, allow me to provide an overview of some of the activities planned for this fantastic event:
At 7pm on Friday 17th, doors open for our chart topping live music extravaganza from The Cuban Brothers and DJ Trevor Nelson on stage in our Green Carnival music marquee. This is music to drink to and yes, the bar will definitely be open!
On Saturday 18th, thousands will flock to take part in our Green Carnival Fun Run and World Record attempt at the Largest Human Shamrock!
Our first running event, ‘Moyra's Green Run’ took place in March 2016 on Longsands Beach, Tynemouth and was a huge success. This year we have 3 events to look forward to: the Disability Event at 9.30am, the 5km Run at 10am and the 3km Family Fun Run at 10.05am. All races will start on Longsands beach, Tynemouth (situated in front of Crusoe’s Beach café) where participants can choose their event and distance.
Following the Fun Run, our World Record attempt at the Largest Human Shamrock will take place at Tynemouth Priory and Castle with great entertainment in our main marquee from North Tyneside Music Education Hub’s choirs and dance groups, plus North East food concessions and a bar. Also, make sure you don’t miss out on visiting our five interactive ‘worlds’ focused around Energy and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Locality and Lifestyle, Literacy and Language, and History and Heritage where there will be a new discovery around every corner.
When the sun goes down, our famous ‘Shamrock Ball’ will light up our central marquee on Saturday evening. Guests will experience a sparkling champagne reception while our talented Irish dancers take to the stage. The performance will be followed by a delicious three course ‘St Patrick’s themed’ meal prepared by award winning Ramside Event Catering, whilst ‘Grace Under Pressure’ - one of the Northeast's most popular and in-demand local bands - will entertain us with a set list comprising favourites from The Beatles to The Killers and everything in between. The event promises to be a night of fun, comedy and fabulous live music. In addition to this, guests can also witness an incredible emerald green Tynemouth Priory and Castle like you’ve never seen before!
All funds raised will be donated to our three chosen charities: The PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) Association, who fund research and support for this debilitating Parkinson’s-like neurological condition; the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, who fund research and support for this genetic condition affecting more than 10,800 people in the UK; and the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project, who are dedicated to building a fitting and lasting memorial to the fishermen who left the port of North Shields and lost their lives at sea.
Whether you come to dance the weekend away, do the Chariots of Fire run, or simply be part of a world record attempt, do check us out at our website here. I hope to see you all there!
